Why was Scott Peterson charged with double murder if fetuses arent people?

I know this case was years ago, but the principle is still relevant. Why was he charged with double murder if according to liberals fetuses are clearly not humans. I've heard fetuses being equated to parasites or a growth...so could i be charged with something for removing an ingrown toenail outside of the doctors office...it is a normal medical procedure afterall.
