How do I compress and add a video file to my iPod?

I was wondering if anyone knew how to compress a regular DVD File to make it compatible with an iPod, and then how to actually put it on the iPod. If anyone has the algorithm it wuld be a lot of help. TY. And btw if you know how to use an algorithm I need to know that too.
