How can I fly smoothly with an 8 month old?

I have flown with my baby before, and it was a very bad flight. He was screaming the entire time with a pacifier in his mouth. The previous flight we went on was only and hour, but this next flight is 3 hours long. Does anyone have any advise on how to make it through the flight with happiness for everyone?
